Description
I imagined one of the beautiful women of New Orleans offering flowers on the street, and a couple who stopped to chat and ended up buying a bouquet in this closeup. Inspired by my first visit to New Orleans to celebrate my husband's birthday, this painting is a view from my memory of the trip and a photo of this street band. Mardi Gras beads were on every tree and telephone poll and the people were still glowing from the Saints' Super Bowl win. Everyone was welcoming and so many musicians shared their music freely in the streets, celebrating the pure joy of living. This painting also represents a breakthrough for me as a painter. I was inspired by a chat with my instructor at an artists' retreat and began drawing out the scene with charcoal. As I drew I was asking myself what I was doing since, I had never included human figures (even one) in my paintings. Here I had drawn out six people in one painting! But I was very motivated by the subject matter. I consider it a little unfinished because there are still facial details I would like to improve.
